Job Summary
Contribute to the development and implementation of cell testing, quality control, and safety characterization efforts across a variety of platforms. Coordinate with Production and Test teams to ensure smooth workflow for production activities. Document processes supporting in-house testing capabilities and Quality Management System (QMS) development. Oversee production cell test efforts to ensure quality cells are being delivered to a growing customer base. A strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail, and experience in battery testing are required.

In this position, you will be a critical part of our core team, helping take next-generation chemistries and packaging them into advanced battery cells.
We are looking for a skilled, dependable, and detail-oriented Cell Test Engineer, to join our team in the Bay Park area of San Diego, CA. The candidate will draw from previous experience testing battery cells to develop and maintain protocols for electrical, mechanical, and thermal testing to meet the team’s needs. Knowledge of safe laboratory procedures when handling battery cells is a must. The ideal candidate will be process and quality oriented, able to work independently, and support continuous cell production testing and ad-hoc cell test requests from the wider technical and commercial teams.
Responsibilities
- Support the quality team; focused on the testing of production battery cells including maintenance of battery cyclers, preparing test plans, writing programs to execute tests, ensuring safety protocols, and logging data accurately and efficiently to support cell production.
- Contribute to company growth by performing, validating, and documenting procedures for current and future testing protocols and analysis.
- Drive process improvements to ensure cell test and quality control keeps up with both current cell production and scaled-up future commercial activities.
- Troubleshoot equipment and sample issues, working to maintain test equipment and resolve problems.
- Contribute to the fabrication and assembly of testing infrastructure to expand, improve, and scale cell test capabilities.
- Perform, promote, and maintain quality control processes ensuring quality products are shipped to customers.
- Support safety characterization using in-house safety characterization and abuse testing equipment.
- Inspect and analyze battery hardware and cells in a laboratory setting, including inside of a glovebox, fume hood, and under magnification.
- Operation of various machines, custom equipment, gauges, and test instruments to identify and investigate failures in battery components and assembly.
- Monitor, record, and analyze data from instrument software and manual measurements.
- Develop, document, and follow applicable written procedures (Work Instructions, SOPs).
- Accurately and comprehensively record work in travelers, batch records, and logbooks.
- Follow protocols for safe handling of chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Maintain an organized and functional workspace with general duties.
- Other duties requested by the company.

Requirements
- BS + 1-3 years experience working in a production and/or laboratory environment, preferably in batteries.
- Working knowledge of battery cell construction and electrochemical testing equipment, including familiarity with Arbin/Maccor/Bio-Logic test equipment
- Attention to detail with efficient and accurate data logging skills
- Familiarity with chemical and hazardous material handling best practices.
- Familiarity with laboratory process equipment including pumps, valves, temperature and pressure measurement devices.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, lift 35 lbs, and stand for extended periods of time.
- Dexterous – able to safely grasp, move, or assemble small objects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- An aptitude for learning new things and a keen eye for improving processes.
At the time of posting, the expected starting salary range for this role is $75,000 – $100,000. This is a salary exempt position. The actual pay depends on multiple individualized factors, including education, job-related knowledge, experience, and skills, which will be assessed during the interview process. The comprehensive compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as health benefits, 401k, and company stock options. The base pay range and package is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
